Over/Under Explained: Complete Totals Betting Guide

Everything you need to know about over/under (totals) betting, including how it works, key numbers, analysis tips, and winning strategies.

How Over/Under Betting Works

The sportsbook sets a total (combined score of both teams). You bet whether the actual combined score will be over or under that number. Like spread bets, totals are typically priced at -110 on each side.

Example: NFL Game

Total: 48.5

Over 48.5 (-110): You win if combined score is 49+

Under 48.5 (-110): You win if combined score is 48 or less

Final score: Patriots 24, Dolphins 28 = 52 total. Over wins.

Factors That Affect Totals

Favors the Over

  • High-powered offenses
  • Poor or injured defenses
  • Fast pace of play
  • Indoor/dome games
  • Warm, calm weather
  • Games with high projected spreads

Favors the Under

  • Elite defenses
  • Run-heavy offenses (control clock)
  • Slow pace of play
  • Wind above 15 mph
  • Rain, snow, extreme cold
  • Low-scoring rivalry games

Totals Betting Strategies

Track pace and tempo

Teams that play at a fast pace create more scoring opportunities. In the NBA, possessions per game is a key metric. In the NFL, plays per game and time of possession matter. Two fast-paced teams often produce overs.

Monitor weather closely

Weather is one of the most reliable totals indicators. Check forecasts close to game time - late changes in wind or precipitation can create value if the line has not adjusted.

Consider the public bias

Recreational bettors tend to bet overs because they want to root for scoring. This creates a slight market inefficiency favoring unders, especially in high-profile games with inflated totals.
